Inside the Kalinga Stadium Sports Science Centre: How Odisha is Setting the National Benchmark

When the High Performance Sports Science Centre at Kalinga Stadium, Bhubaneswar opened its doors in February 2019, it marked a turning point for athlete development in India. Today, it stands as one of the most advanced sports science facilities in the country — and Odisha's numbers tell the story.

Over 63,000 sessions delivered. More than 8,500 athletes supported. 292 medals won by athletes who have trained and recovered at this centre. These are not just statistics — they represent a systematic, science-backed approach to building sporting excellence at scale.

What Makes Bhubaneswar Different

The centre's strength lies in its integration of technology with expert-led care. Athletes at Kalinga Stadium have access to altitude-based training environments, biomechanical motion analysis, interactive cycling systems, cryotherapy, and recovery technologies — all under one roof.

But what truly sets this centre apart is Odisha's commitment to data. The state is among the very few in India to have completed scientific testing profiles for nearly 90% of its athletes. That means coaches and sports administrators can make evidence-based decisions rather than relying on intuition alone.

A Model for the Country

The Bhubaneswar centre has demonstrated that high-performance sports science is not just for elite athletes at the national level. With the right infrastructure, institutional commitment, and technology partnerships, states across India can build ecosystems that identify talent early, prevent injuries, support recovery, and guide athletes toward peak performance.

At AFL, we are proud to have been a part of this journey — and to carry the lessons learned in Odisha into our work across Rajasthan, Assam, Jharkhand, and beyond.
